[FbL022] BpOlar - Dhūpa

Back in 2009 Dirk Driesen sent a demo ep to XS Records (Portuguese netlabel) and when Tiago and I received it I immediately said that we were going to go ahead with it. Almost 3 years later FeedbackLoop Label proudly presents you a new BpOlar release the Dhūpa ep.

Dhūpa means incense in Hindi and Dirk Driesen takes us on an inner trip providing us a set of microcosmos, intriguing scenes that somehow take us to empty and vast spaces, but at the same time ground us to the earth, with the wind chimes like sounds filling the air and delicate yet sometimes disturbing drones blown throughout sparsely.

Dirk Driesen achieves with Dhūpa a ceremonial feel that is at the same time an opportunity to achieve an inner state of peace yet slightly surrounded with the dark shadows of doubt, and from this clash of emotions, a true reality of the self is allowed to emerge.

closing the FbL postcards series and other news

Unfortunately it is not possible to continue the FbL postcards series project, due to the accumulation of several other ongoing projects and also due to several other aspects of my life. For these I would like to apologize, especially to the artists from whom I already received tracks. I hope you forgive me.

Also, I foresee a strong reduction on the throughput at the regular free editions at FbL, so bare with me until this storm passes and hopefully things will improve in the future. But stay tuned because next week we will be bring you the first 2012 release by BpOlar.

2011 has been a great year for music and for us. 11 regular editions were released plus 1 remix album and the prolonging of podcasts. Also, 2 CDr's were made, marking another step in the consolidation of the label (copies are still available - Opaque Glitter and Liminal). 2011 also saw the coming of other 2 new projects: the digital sound postcards and the sister label Heart and Soul.

We look forward to 2012, with the promise to keep up with the quality that you dear listener hopefully feel about our releases.

When I heard at the beginning of the year the ep Attended only by birds that BGUDNA released I knew I had to invite him to release at FeedbackLoop Label, and so I did. Thankfully Björgvin accepted my invitation and created this kind of sequel to Attended Only By Birds. This Last Act is therefore a prolonging of the filigree piano tunes but with added sounds that take us to an imagery of desolated land, cold but strangely warm inside.

I am very happy to present you This Last Act by BGUDNA, because it thrives in a minimalistic approach, a magnificent use of silence and an understated mood that sound astonishingly simple and yet beautiful.

Short Bio

Björgvin Guðnason was born in Iceland, 1980. Soon become interested in drawing and painting. At the age of 19, he went to art school and studied graphic design and started to experiment with electronic music. After graduation, while working as a web designer, he would give out cd´s of ambient music to friends and perform in small venues. In May 2010, the “Safe Harbor” EP a synth heavy soundscape was his first release, soon followed by “Reborn in Strange Places”, “Other Plans for Field Experience” and the well received “Attended Only by Birds” minimal ambient piano EP. His latest release is “This Last Act” on the FeedbackLoop Label.

After releasing my solo record AGORA earlier this year, on which AGF assisted in production, I decided to release a remix album, titled AGORA Regathered. Regathered features input from Scanner, Blevin Blectum, and Steinbrüchel among many others. over half a year was spent curating this material and the final collection of remixes was carefully cherry picked. I see these tracks as not simply remixes but essential extensions of the original ideas.

AGORA Regathered was a chance for me to expand on the initial concept of the AGORA record by gathering together diverse re-presentations of my work. I carefully chose mixers from widely different demographics, both notable and obscure, but all of whom are dear to my heart. this echoes the concept of the ancient agora, by uniting people from various backgrounds into a single moment.

As is reflected in the final outcome, their approaches varied, but after placing calls for several versions of each track on AGORA from a vast range of artists I deeply respect, I patiently selected the remixes that I felt best exemplified a natural extension of my original tracks. the result is a collection which takes my compositions to their core and magnifies their essence. this was an exciting and rewarding record to curate; I send endless thanks to everyone involved and especially to my listeners.

When I listen to a new work for the first time, I like to imagine the artist's process. With Devin Underwood's (Specta Ciera) music, it is easy to picture someone whole-heartedly, uninhibitedly enjoying his craft. His approach is as much about placing specific sounds in a space as it is about the journey getting there. He works tirelessly to articulate the images and stories in his head through the use of sound design and sonic exploration.

His latest work, "Underpass," pulls the listener along through a range of emotions, like a thread which acts as a sonic guide. The title track, "Underpass", opens the EP with deep swells of ambience, slow-moving melodies and sheets of static that swirl around the listener. Slow waves undulate and wash over the listener. In "Forgotten Room", Devin blends field recordings, subdued notes that seem to whisper, echoes that bounce around, low rumbles, and faint textures of what almost sound like a distant piano. "Unlit Pathway" contains brooding undertones, a hazy, blurry, dreamlike state, wind blowing, scraping sounds along surfaces, and tones that seem to reach out of darkness. The closing number, "Underpass (Darren Harper rmx)", retains the overall mood of the original while new sonic elements are introduced as an awakening with traces of guitar that merely hint at complete phrases.

Each of the four tracks stand solidly on their own - vignettes of a larger picture, a dense, sonic painting. Quiet snapshots in time that have been carefully crafted and thoughtfully executed reveal a lush tapestry and narrative. This EP only scratches the surface of the compositional style and approach Specta Ciera employs. With releases on I, Absentee, Secret Station Records, Audio Gourmet, Earth Mantra, and Distance Recordings, Devin is no stranger to experimental electronic music production. After experiencing "Underpass", do yourself the favor of delving deep into Specta Ciera's back catalog. You will be richly rewarded for your efforts.

FeedbackLoop Label recommends yet again an excellent free download compilation released by the music webzine FutureSequence curated by Michael Waring. Not only this is a great selection of some of the best experimental electronic music, it also includes several artists that released or are going to release at FeedbackLoop Label, namely, Specta Ciera, Pascal Savy, I've lost and Le Berger.

SEQUENCE2 continues the sequence series curated by Futuresequence - aiming to showcase the breadth and depth of experimental music around the world right now. With a clear focus on supporting independent artists and labels the compilations hopefully provide a platform for emerging as well as established artists.

After the success of SEQUENCE1, whether to continue the series wasn't a hard decision to make. More than anything I really enjoyed the whole process of putting the compilation together; gathering and choosing tracks, getting to know the artists better, creating the artwork, promoting the release - the whole thing.

As a statement of intent then, the series will continue with a compilation release every few months, showcasing the best of experimental, electronica, ambient, drone, noise (etc) has to offer.

Derek’s work is determined by his voice and words. Exploring the boundaries of sound he combines is strong lyricism with deep beats. Much like AGF’s work Derek Piotr adventures himself to the realm of vocal expressions as primordial sonic material.

The Focus remixes present you this particular domain reworked by other sound artists, which in the end become a coherent piece as a whole, developing ideas that Derek Piotr started and taking them into several different directions. Short Bio

Derek Piotr is a Poland-born composer based currently in New England. The main focus of his work is vocal manipulation and electroacoustic composition, either directed towards song form or abstract experimentation. He has interned for Meredith Monk; collaborated with AGF, Scanner, and Khonnor; and had works featured on The Wire's Adventures in Modern Music radio program (May 2010). His last work, AGORA, explored ectroacoustic and digital sound in context with the unification of different cultures by including field samples from various countries within the body of work. A remix album to supplement AGORA is currently in-progress.

There are many types of silence. The absence of sound in the physical world being the most obvious, but silence also represents a philosophical anomaly which we are all concerned with in some way, whether we know it or not. The forever asked but never answered question 'If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?' illustrates the dilemma perfectly - does silence actually exist? Is it not just an ideal, only to be experienced, if that is the right word, when we cease to be?

Montreal based artist Samuel Landry meditates on this concept over the course of this two track EP '…On Silence'. For the past 2 years Landry has been creating ambient drone works under the moniker of 'Le Berger', exploring tonal dynamics through a minimal aesthetic, '…On Silence' is his most reductive work yet.

The evolution of first track 'A Manufactured Concept' appears to pass almost unnoticed, so that we move through a space quite unknowing of our location within it. The slow gaussian blur of the sine wave like tone enraptures the listener with a subtle yet enveloping texture. With this long form piece, Landry nods quietly to the work of other minimalists such as Stephan Mathieu, Taylor Deupree, Wil Bolton and Richard Chartier. 'Under the Bridge (not downtown)' qualifies as something of a warmer balance, accompanied by field recordings that bring the piece a strange percussion and sense of place. The title also, is indicative of the artists sense of dry irreverent humour.

An intriguing auditory experience '...On Silence' presents beautifully crafted patient sounds and allows for a reflective state to be cast over the listener.

AUTUMN STORIES

I really feel the Autumn, it’s a season i deeply love. Melancholic, as my music is sometimes, warm colours, the nature seems to take a rest after the big rush during the summer time.

This year, Autumn will be even more special. I decided to start a big - big project to take you all from the comforting-but-melacholic lights of the Autumn to the cold and white winter. And i’ll do that every week.

Starting from the first autumn week, i’ll compose, record and upload a new song (hopefully….!!).

What happens inbetween states is probably one of the most fascinating aspects about "ambient" music. At the surface, all seems quiet and peaceful, but when you delve a little bit more inside the sound you start to apprehend the true meaning of the sounds.

Neil Wiernik's latest album Broken Strings, Plastic Tubes and Bedside Serenades, is a perfect example of this dynamics, or shall I say this stillness. The four songs of the album all seem to be static, and I mean they are almost like in suspension, but also they are soaked in electric static, like you were in a foggy landcaspe and all you could feel was the electricity in the air, nothing to see, nothing to touch. And when you start listening to this static, you soon realize that the rhythmic intervals are not the same, the deepness of the static evolves, but you can't quite understand what is the logic behind it. And you feel totally lost, though not desperate.

Neil Wiernik masters his music quite beautifully, with virtuoso craftsman hands and an elegant stream of sounds, there is tension and peace at the same time everywhere. Movement and stillness.

Short Bio

Montreal ex-pat naw (Neil Wiernik) who currently calls Toronto his home, began composing electronic music in 1988 with explorations in audio art and experimental music. Neil's interest in sound and technology has lead him to a continued questioning and refinement of audio tools and modes of production resulting in experimentation with altered instruments, modified devices, and custom software environments. Neil's music could be described as warm, atmospheric, and cinematic electronic music. The sound design of naw is firmly grounded in the rich traditions of dub studio culture but can also be weighed alongside formal contemporary composition. His music has been described in "The Wire" as having "...the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays." Neil has released music on various labels including noise factory and more recently paper+sound under his naw guise. He has also released music on elevation recordings and soon on BLRr for his most recent ambient post rock project with aidan baker as whisper room. Neil is also a founding member of the online digital arts publication vague terrain.

31st August 2011 marks a year since Futuresequence's launch, I knew I wanted to do something to celebrate this but wasn't quite sure what. Asking our Twitter, Facebook and Google+ followers for suggestions, one idea was to put together a compilation of tracks contributed by various artists.

After a quick think, I decided to do it and SEQUENCE1 got underway. That was just over three weeks agoThe response I received from artists was genuinely overwhelming, I've been bowled over by the number of people wanting to be involved - artists who we have interviewed, reviewed, had mixes from or had been in contact with in other ways.

There is a mixture of exclusive tracks, edits of existing tracks, some from forthcoming releases and from past releases. In all instances I couldn't be happier the tracks, and the lineup we have.

My intention with SEQUENCE1 is to celebrate not only the 1st year of the site, but the breadth and quality of the electronic and experimental music 'scene'. There is such a strong sense of community within this field, and it's great to feel part of it. I'm very excited about SEQUENCE1, this is why we do what we do isn't it? Because this music excites us.

The first time I heard Jason Shanley's music was his "Paginated Overflow" release on PublicSpaces Lab. The album was raw, full of depth, drones, loops, distortion, feedback. Its raw beauty hit me immediately and kept me listening to it over and over again. Layers of texture, saturation, and decay from his guitar and pedals. It's on my 'great albums of the year' list. The only thing I ever found lacking was it needed a bit of mastering - and frankly, the album was so good it just didn't matter. A perfect case of it's not the tools, or the gear, or how it was recorded... it's the artist plugging into the flow of the music in their head and letting it out. This is what music is all about to me. That gut feeling, instinct, and raw emotion. Give me a great album over an immaculately produced one any day.

It's a great honor for me that Leonardo Rosado, the curator of Feedback Loop, asked me to write a few words about the new Cinchel album coming out. He knows my love for Feedback Loop and for Jason's "Paginated Overflow" and he knew I'd love "Ritual Habitat". I've listened at least ten times to this e.p. so far - and I'm definitely a fan. There's the same rawness, the same "plugged into the universal flow of music" feel, and with "Ritual Habitat" I hear a bit of growth. Maybe more confidence in Jason's work, more space between notes, more willingness to explore the quieter side. It's everything great about "Paginated Overflow" with a new maturity and grasp. Yes, it's better.

Leonardo has created one of the best series of releases out there currently. His ability to pick artists and albums that fit the feel of Feedback Loop borders on brilliance. I'm honored to know him and call him friend. He did not go wrong with adding Cinchel to the fine list of artists released on Feedback Loop.

While writing these notes I've been listening to "Ritual Habitat". I don't want to ruin the experience for you by describing each track in detail. I'm not a reviewer anyway, I'm a fellow musician. However, I would like to say as I reach the end of "Ritual Habitat" - the last 2 minutes of the album literally soars into the sky on layers of musical feedback - at first like the blinding light of the sun piercing the horizon ...until it gets just high enough in the sky to gently bathe the earth in a hazy glow of wakefulness.

I will be listening to "Ritual Habitat" for a long time to come.

Short Bio

I am a Chicago based musician working with guitar, effects and laptop to create abstract ambient music that is both minimal and dense. My main focus has been the interaction of sounds/notes with themselves. When I began playing guitar at the age of 17 I practiced this idea using solo guitar and a simple delay, influenced by the guitar playing of The Edge (from U2). After a few years I was finally able to afford a simple 4-track and I began exploring the effect of layering guitars and adjusting the tape speed to produce interference and dissonance. It was at this point I started listening to the music of Glen Branca and Rhys Chatham and could hear the beauty that was an ensemble of guitars, where the whole ensemble was a large instrument that stopped sounding like a guitar. With only the use of delay, layering and distortion I attempt to make a lot of guitars no longer sound like guitars. I have avoided the use of MIDI patches/samples and advanced software like Max/MSP mostly because I would rather spend my time playing guitar than learning to program. I like to call this minimal dense music for that reason.

There must be something in the water in Canada, the sheer abundance of talented and creative composers that I come across from Canada is astounding to me. The likes of Lyndsie Aguire, Simon Trottier and Nicolas Bernier spring to mind immediately when one associates ‘netlabel’ and ‘Canada’. It is a rich culture of creativity, and SIGHUP continues this trend with an intensely focused and meticulous release in City Passage.

Steve Hamann is the mind behind SIGHUP, an exploration into ambient music that has had a life over the last decade. Hamann describes his heavily textured ambient pieces as ‘the abstracted way in which people understand and process place’ and there is no better way to describe City Passage. The three tracks, spread over 20 minutes take you on a journey through a musical metropolis where Hamann successfully synthesises electronically manipulated sounds from the streets of Toronto with deep swells of ambience.

City import combines cold layers of sound with abrasive manipulated recordings that loop and grow louder with every passing second. The sense of place and location here is vivid as your mind locks into the groove of mangled sounds before they die away, seemingly habituated out of consciousness, only to return once again. The city is a dark place at times and I am reminded of grey cement filled construction sites, devoid of colour as City import slowly fades away.

Though Hamann paints a sombre picture of the city, with its tall buildings stretching to the sky and cars humming in the distance he doesn’t let go of the human aspect of the city. City Passage slowly builds with a child’s voice; words echo and are indiscernible but nevertheless human as an ambient wall of sound shifts its weight, caught in between the child and the bustling streets. Whenever I feel like taking a stroll through the streets of Toronto taking in and ignoring what I please all I will need is a pair of headphones and City Passage to keep me company.

Toronto-based musician Steve Hamann has been composing and performing electronic noise/ambient music as SIGHUP for the past decade. Recent works by SIGHUP have focused on the idea of the ambient experience, the abstracted way in which people understand and process place. At the heart of City Passage is the daily routine of slowly passing through a city, a meditation on both listening to and ignoring the metropolitan experience.The work is a continuation of SIGHUP's explorations of framing and transforming non-electronic sounds through electronic processes. All field recordings used were captured in Toronto, and all instruments were played/recorded by Steve Hamann.

Based in Washington, D.C, Benjamin Dauer is a musician, artist and designer who is in possession of a talent that is combined with an impressive output. Besides his solo material, Benjamin is also known as one half of The Dwindlers, a duo with partner Michelle Seaman, whose recent album Dreams was also released on Portugal’s Feedback Loop to very favourable reviews. All this without a single slip in quality, one has to wonder where Benjamin derives such a wealth of inspiration from and when he finds time to sleep.

Saturation Event is an album comprising seven ambient tracks, thick with explorative synthesis and brooding undertones which surround the listener and hint at something which could be sinister, just out of reach. Opening with Borderland Of Sleep, Benjamin composes with care and the artist removes all trace of human design, leaving one alone to navigate a journey through the mysterious and immersive listening experience.

By mid-point, Benjamin delivers the intangible Crown Of Sparks, a possible album highlight, though it is difficult to pick out specific moments in such a cohesive, organic work. After many more high points have passed, the album comes to a close all too soon with Transient Pool. Saturation Event is another unique gem in Feedback Loop’s ever-expanding roster of experimental music and a work which will inspire further exploration of Benjamin’s rich back catalogue of music.

Benjamin Dauer is a Washington, DC based musician and composer who explores the boundaries of modern music through experimentation and play. Leonardo Rosado has already a stable and bright musical career that has captivated many listeners. His latest release, Opaque Glitter, shows a wide range of sensorial, urban and abstract landscapes. In his music there is always a contrast between the harshness of noise and the sweetness of melody that mirrors the intricacies of life itself.

The first track in the album, “Leaving and staying”, has the melancholic and distant warmth of an intimacy that takes me back to Andrei Tarkovsky’s onirically strange and transcendentally beautiful atmospheres. These also felt in “It Ends Here”, permeated by the sweetness of a sporadic theremin line and the contrasting harshness of pulsating white noise. In the second track, a delicate vibrato sings itself among the progressively increasing noises, sweeping the listener into the furrows of a multilayered surface. This same graceful fragility is heard in the stringed love that is told in the next track, a love that unfolds itself and that gets more and more tangible amongst the everyday clatter. The hidden melodies of Rosado remind us that the solidity of life provides an escape to those who dare to hear behind. The hypnotic drones in “Dancing and Falling” transport us into a more abstract level, showing an upward pull that is counteracted by the centripetal force of the more discrete sounds that anchor it to the ground, without subtracting any lightness to it. A different lightness, more palpable and oriented towards the wonders of the exterior, is perceived in “The Wind Blowing in my Face”. In the last track in the album, “Soft Like Leaves Falling”, the touch of dry leaves leads us to the melancholic and sweet farewell. In it, the love-vibrating melodies sung in previous tracks are more perceptible and become more real through the metallic puncta that pierce the song.

On the whole, Opaque Glitter is a complex and heterogeneously coherent album that shows some of Leonardo Rosado’s best tricks to dazzle the listener. Both old followers of his work and newcomers will enjoy this masterpiece. Besides, I’m sure he will keep filling us all with wonder in his future works.

Welsh electroacoustic artist Mark Walters aka Savaran comes to Feedbackloop with a five track EP 'Resonances' after a number of netlabel releases over the past year. Utilising both digital and analogue instrumentation with field recordings, samples and an array of effects, Mark develops refined micro-soundscapes, tightly knit into granular textures which demand an attentive ear. In Resonances he marks waypoints in the contours of his own life, describing personal experiences - memories of events and locations - and his own interests in history, astronomy and geology.

Opener 'The Forest' is closely grounded in nature, a perpetually moving and shifting piece - being more and more ethereal. 'Aurora' cinematically depicts the sound of the lights in the sky created by particles passing through the atmosphere. A granular focus that is present also in the micro movements suggested in 'Tectonic'. Constructed literally from the vibrations of earthquakes through a custom built digital effect, the track offers a kind of cathartis, made all the more relevant with the recent happenings in Japan. 'Graaw' is a childhood place remembered and revisted, illustrated with a careful eye, and representative of Mark's unique observational style.

In last track 'Delphic' we've travelled as far from earthly groundings as we can, to otherworldly dimensions set within Greek mythology. Delphi was the seat of the oracle, housed in the temple of Apollo. Inspired by this historic reference - Mark translates these dramatic visuals into an exciting sonic experience.

Resonances is deeply personal, born from historic and personal interest which reveals itself to be emotionally evocative and intriguing for the listener. By allowing us this intimate insight into these parts of himself, Mark achieves a brilliant expression of his own history, memory and self.

Short Biography

Savaran is Mark Walters from Wales, UK. He is an electronic musician, sound designer, sound artist and full-time archaeologist recording from his small home studio on the Welsh border near Shrewsbury.

His music crosses many of the electronic genres but leans toward the ambient, experimental, electro-acoustic, cinematic and soundscaping styles of production. Inspiration comes from many directions including the random daily events that life throws at you, landscapes, environment, atmosphere, geology, astronomy, past cultures, or just the indefinable need to make music. The music itself is created on a variety of digital and analog instruments and blended with field recordings, sampled sounds and an array of effects. The end result is a textured palette of sounds derived from visual and audible references which explore our own world and the universe beyond at the macro and micro levels.

As everyone is no doubt aware, Japan was hit with a major natural disaster on March 11th. The country's citizens are in dire need of humanitarian aid. The netlabel scene is based on the ideas of charity, moral action, and global awareness, so it is only fitting that we produce a compilation with those principles in mind to assist those who are in urgent need. It just needed to be organized - and so I put out a call to musicians and netlabels to help. The response to the project was immense and immediate. Music submissions, offers of help with various aspects of the project, and plenty of encouragement began to pour into my inbox. In fact, there were so many submissions that I had to assemble a team to evaluate them. Numerous netlabels stepped forward with offers to post the compilation on their own sites. In doing this, we are overcoming the traditional limitations of physical media and its distrubition. There is no label of origin; every participating label is a part of one greater effort. Talented artists submitted their artwork for every aspect of the project. Every image for this entire project - the logo, the cover art, website backgrounds - was given freely to this effort. When my good friend Leonardo Rosado asked me to write some introduction notes to the new Bernadette Erikka’s EP “Lie with care”, I accepted with pure enthusiasm.
And this for several reasons, beside my friendship with Leonardo: FbL netlabel is continuously improving the quality of its releases and the services they provide to artists is much more than a link from which you can download the albums and of course, the curiosity to listen to Bernadette’s work, a pianist (my field!) as well.
Reading the bio in her website, you may discover that Bernadette interests in arts are not only limited to music: she keeps following different paths, including painting, graphics and writing. So my curiosity grew once I read about this “total” artist, who was about to release “Lie with care” EP on one of my favourite netlabel.

“Lie with care” is far away from being a mere “short EP” as the artist humbly says – the total length of the 5 tracks (more than 30 minutes), entitles it to be considered a full album, with its own, clear and strong personality. This is the first adjective I had while listening to the first track of the EP: personality.

Bernadette’s style, far away from being labeled as “common” or “mainstream”, consists, at a first glimpse, in a restless stream of piano notes, that keep falling like water drops in the ocean, during a heavy rainy day.

Digging into her musical world is not something you may do at the first listen: the musician, I think, wants you to give time to appreciate her music, listening to it again and again in order to discover the underlying beauty of her musical lines.

This is the advice I want to give you: take time to listen to this “Lie with care” EP, possibly without any other distractions, and you’ll find yourself surprised in slowly discovering and recognizing this artist inner musical ideas, that flow through the whole album as rich, fresh and vivid rivers… Just like it happened to me!

Bernadette Erikka is a digital musician & performer who creates original music, soundscapes/sound environments. Following her family's rich artistic traditions she has been active in several artistic fields including painting & graphics, writings and singing/composing. She has extensive educational background in art history, graphics, new media, sound art, piano, flute and singing. She is active as a musician.since 2010. Her recent works include video soundtracks, theme songs, game music and dark ambient chillout music. She does voice-overs and other performances too. Bernadette Erikka works solo and in collaborations too.

For the record: Bernadette was born in 1983, studied at the Moholy N.L. Art Studio and Haifa University, among others, competed in chess won a newspaper title competition and she is also an avid ping-pong player.

Luca Nasciuti’s compositions are musical events, unfolding in time, much like natural phenomena. They conjure a world of glacial motion, of ebb and flow: evolving sound-worlds with their own biotic life span.
Each of these three new tracks deploys a sparing combination of timbres to evoke its unique musical milieu. Pan~ combines surging waves of white noise with occasional tintinnabulations, underpinned by a subliminal, granular murmur. This same sound— a sort of cosmic background radiation—permeates both Ivory and Elegy, each of which features the filigree scrapings and dissonant drones of the cello, Nasciuti’s instrument of choice. These fragments of sound index the musical soul of the instrument, its propensity for crepuscular melancholy. Elegy has an aptly sepulchral atmosphere, wrapped in the cello’s warm string vibrations, and intermittently casting off brief harmonic flutters. The track coalesces into and concludes with a hesitantly bowed cadenza, and this peroration to the tentative musical gesture is taken up by the first track, Ivory, in which sweeping sonar pulses punctuate a dense patchwork of hammered, scraped and legato cello sounds, with mesmerizing results.

There are possible comparisons to be made between Nasciuti’s music and that of other contemporary experimental sound artists, but for anyone wishing to explore this beguiling composer’s work, these are merely signposts that fail to give a real sense of the distinctive nature of his sound world. Tactile and immersive, and with a highly organic sense of duration, Nasciuti’s music enchants and captivates, gradually drawing the listener into its compelling and convincing universe.

Luca Nasciuti is a London based composer trained in electroacoustic composition, classical music, visual and performing arts. His work spans from installation, to video and performance art, focusing on the legacy between acoustic and electroacoustic sound, and the interplay of sonic and visual practices within site-specific contexts. He has been granted residencies for solo and collaborative projects in the UK and he is exhibiting and performing his works throughout Europe.

Elisa Luu (Elisabetta Luciani) is a Rome based composer. She begins her music career as a saxophone player, moving freely from fusion to jazz. Elisa Luu has been involved in many music projects over the years, including fusion quartet Prodotti Speciali and Short’s Monday Night Jazz Orchestra. She participated to Berklee Jazz clinics where she got a special mention as alto sax player. In 2007 she moved forward and started to compose ambient/electronic music . She released in 2009 her debut album ‘Chromatic Sigh’ with Hidden Shoal Recordings. She now runs ‘La bèl netlabel’ with friend Adriano Bossola and they released recently Menion's first album 'Out of sound/out of silence' and her own latest EP ‘The time of waiting’.

I live in Chicago and play out very rarely, this recording uses samples recorded during a live performance in early 2009. The first track is the closest to the way the performance sounded. The next 4 tracks use all the same samples but in each I have picked new looping points, stretched/slowed down a loop, or affected various loops in a number of ways using Ableton Live. I did this as both a challenge to use such a small template as well as to explore each sample fully and deeply.

Warsaw based Scottish musician Neil Milton - whose music is described as a "snowdrift of ambient soundscapes, electronic experiments and haunting, elegant modern-classical compositions" - will release a free, Creative Commons licensed e.p. on Manchester’s Valentine Records on Monday the 14th March 2011. The e.p. will be available from the label’s website, www.valentinerecords.co.uk.

The e.p., released on Neil’s birthday, is titled ‘white spring, black cloud’ and was written and recorded over 5 days in late February. The four pieces in this collection have a mix of modern- classical instrumentation and less conventional uses of sound such as pseudo-random sine waves and output from short wave radio.

The tracks on the e.p. are titled ‘ennui’, ‘314’, ‘biała wiosna, czarna chmura’ and ‘variations on radio music by john cage’.

On his BT Digital Music Awards 2010 nominated show, champion of new music in Scotland, Jim Gellatly, called Neil's music "...rather beautiful", a sentiment that was also shared by the acclaimed internet radio station, Fluid Radio. The Scotsman's music blog "Radar" have proclaimed Neil to be "...disgustingly talented" and the Scottish independent record label and blog 17 seconds praised Neil's music as being "jaw-droppingly, heartbreakingly beautiful".

Scáth M’anam is the first album by I’ve Lost to be released on Relaxed Machinery. Scáth M’anam is a Gaelic phrase, which can be translated as “Shadow of My Soul”. The artist, aka Bobby Jones, chose this title by looking to his Irish roots. He explains the project’s motive:

“As a reaction to the unstoppable machine of technological advancements, I composed this album as a means to desperately hold on to, and express, my humanity. The works are the result of an emotional, and subsequently human, response to the world. They are fragile, intimate, personal and genuine.”

For someone who thinks it’s difficult to describe music in general it’s even more difficult to describe the soundscapes of BIRDS OF PASSAGE. The influences of Alicia Merz – the girl behind BIRDS OF PASSAGE – are her memories, breathless-inspiring cold winds, the smell and atmosphere of a spring day, smoking cigarettes, sunshine and shadows. As a mixture of all these elements and a minimalistic experimental instrumentation you could describe her music as follows: sometimes shy, sometimes more energetic (“Fantastic Frown”) but always intensely and extremly private. Listening to her debut record WITHOUT THE WORLD is like sharing one long day with Alicia and her thoughts in the diverse landscapes of her home country New Zealand.

Alicia doesn’t need the bombastic spectacle of a band to evoke emotions – with the help of different instruments, used in a minimalsitic way and combined with field recordings she doesn’t create specific songs – she builds up a mood. You maybe can describe BIRDS OF PASSAGE as a singer songwriter for people who don’t like singer songwriter music. There’s no typical song structure, there’s no melody to chase after – but there’s a development which absorbs you and which makes you start to think about elements you block out in your everyday life.

FeedbackLoop Label proudly presents you the first ep of 2011 by Monolyth and Cobalt. And I couldn't think of a better way to start 2011, as Monolyth and Cobalt is such a talented artist, that isn't afraid of expanding the boundaries of ambient and classical music.

In this gorgeous ep La température du feuillage entre deux saisons the listener takes a trip through desolate landscapes, but always with insights on the beauty that lies within. Much like a flower blossoming amidst the burnt soil. These are probably not familiar grounds, but they are captivating due to their intrinsic beauty. Noise, feedback, strings, piano, drones, field recordings, silence all working to deliver a deep emotional experience. Another key highlight of the ep its the sonic diversity presented, from almost noise dark ambient into Durutti Column filigrees, and weeping strings, everything can happen, but an astonishing coherence is delivered. Breathe deeply and listen carefully for this is a great piece of music.

Biography

Monolyth & Cobalt is the music project from Mathias Van Eecloo, a french artist who encompasses music, photography and performance.

Mathias works with many acoustic instruments like Harmonium, Piano, Various Strings, melodica and some human sound such as breath on tape, fields recordings. He also uses modern technology inclusing samplers, sequencer & effects processors.

All of his music works are released like some book chapters, some soundtracks for imaginary landscapes bringing to mind the film work of Tarkovski, David Lynch, Kubrik and Hitchcock.

His music oscillates between electro-acoustic, electronica, drone, ambient, minimalist or shoegaze.
There are no borders to focus his feelings in sounds, he works in this way that escapes any musical limitations which crosses musical genres and evokes images of the past and the future combined with his compositions.

His first release has been edited on Kesh recordings in 2010 and in parallel he works actually on an important featuring project, The Clyde Parker Project Session who will be finished in January 2011, an eclectic music project with some music artists from various horizons, various countries and with some different music practices.

On my personal behalf I would like to thank everyone for being here as a direct collaborator, musician, listener, music enthusiast, creative commons believer, blogger and anonymous. It has been a great pleasure to close 1 year of activity (I don't know the exact date of inception), but also for upcoming releases that show a promising 2011, and some projects that are on my mind and I would love to push forward if I have the time for them. I hope all of you feel FeedbackLoop Label as part of your life, as it is part of mine, above all what I want is to grow with all of you and without seeming pedantic, hope someday we will be part of a digital / real Collective Memory.

I live and make music in Southern California part of the year, and in Reykjavik, Iceland, during the summer months. I've been playing music in bands since 1983, mostly synth-pop bands, and a few rock bands in Dublin, Ireland in the 90s after attending DePaul University in Chicago. The last band I toured with was on Interscope Records in 2002. This experience, having more low points that high, led me to stop working with bands and begin a journey of self exploration. I waited for a few years, finished a Master's Degree, did some extensive traveling to Europe and Turkey, and began building a home studio three years ago, after moving to California.

I have always loved experimental and electronic music. Kraftwerk and Japan were massive influences when I was young. I remember hiding under my father's desk, closing my eyes, and listening to Autobahn. This idea of bringing everyday sounds and mixing them with technology really amazed me.

Pascal Savy is an electronic music composer who lives and works in London (UK). He started experimenting with synthesisers and drum-machines in the late nineties influenced by Detroit techno, recording his output on tapes and mini-discs. After years of experimentation, his sound began to evolve towards more ambient territories and microsound.
His compositions often involve dense atmospheres and hidden, distant or floating melodies, where field recordings act as a subtle counter-point.

His first full length album was released on Audiomoves in March 2010 followed by the EP The Endless Seasons on Field Noise Records.

Monolyth & Cobalt is the music project from Mathias Van Eecloo, a french artist who encompasses music, photography and performance.
Mathias works with many acoustic instruments like Harmonium, Piano, Various Strings, melodica and some human sound such as breath on tape, fields recordings. He also uses modern technology inclusing samplers, sequencer & effects processors.

All of his music works are released like some book chapters, some soundtracks for imaginary landscapes bringing to mind the film work of Tarkovski, David Lynch, Kubrik and Hitchcock.

His music oscillates between electro-acoustic, electronica, drone, ambient, minimalist or shoegaze.

There are no borders to focus his feelings in sounds, he works in this way that escapes any musical limitations which crosses musical genres and evokes images of the past and the future combined with his compositions.

His first release has been edited on Kesh recordings in 2010 and in parallel he works actually on an important featuring project, The Clyde Parker Project Session who will be finished in January 2011, an eclectic music project with some music artists from various horizons, various countries and with some different music practices.

Marcus Fischer (b.1977) is a musician & multimedia artist currently based in Portland, Oregon. With early beginnings in the LA independent music scene, Fischer moved from there to Olympia, Washington where in addition to drumming in various bands he found new opportunities to further experiment with sound, using tape loops and electronics. The journey led next to Portland, Oregon, where he continues to refine his experimentations. Field recordings, chance, and DIY instruments, coupled with acoustic instrumentation and visual art, define what has become Marcus’s minimal signature. Fischer is also the co-curator of SIX, an annual six-speaker surround sound performance series, and has had the opportunity to score various short films and multimedia performances. In recent years he has also been involved with projects and performances for Art organizations such as the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, SASSAS, C.o.G. and DubLab.

Throughout 2009, Marcus kept a “thing-a-day” blog, a self-inflicted experiment in time and productivity where Fischer tasked himself with completing one creative project a day for one year and documenting it daily on dustbreeding.com. The projects took many forms: photography, video, music, sound experiments, printmaking, graphic design and diy electronics. The blog project allowed him to grow creatively by the constant momentum created through daily expression.

In November 2010, Marcus Fischer's debut full-length album, Monocoastal, was released by the prestigious 12k label. Monocoastal was inspired by Fischer’s movements up and down the West Coast of America over the last two decades. Washes of tape hiss play homage to the Pacific Ocean, while multiple layers of details reveal themselves differently upon each listen. Tiny sounds originate from field recordings and are given the same attention as conventional instrumentation. Found instruments--such as a piano discovered in the corner of a salvage warehouse and a xylophone made of metal wrenches--create sounds captured through both analog and digital recording. Detail is removed rather than added, and harmonic tones are discovered in natural resonances. The compositions on Monocoastal are built upon a bed of low fidelity textures, an exercise in restraint and tension. Space between notes plays an important compositional role to create this balance and tape loops provide organic repetition that wavers subtly with warmth and imperfection. There is a fractured and naturally worn sense to Fischer’s compositions, each one an object itself summed from carefully selected instruments and tones used in their making. Much like Fischer’s creative blog DustBreeding, Monocoastal finds beauty in everyday objects and surroundings and portrays a hazy, personal narrative.

Originally from the Southwest of England. Hopkins started his career
as a filmmaker graduating from Newport Film School in 1998. During his

Hello, I'm John Koch-Northrup, and currently record ambient / minimal techno music and own the Relaxed Machinery label. I started learning piano from my Grandma when I was five years old. I've always looked up to her. She was the church organist for 65 years at the same church in the small town I grew up in.

I started playing in bands when I was 15 and have played countless gigs in many styles of music - at first on keyboards and later shifting to bass guitar. Through school I played trumpet and piano in jazz and concert bands.

Since 1999, I've switched my focus to the ambient music I've always been passionate about and began releasing under the name "Interstitial" on labels such as The Foundry and Red Antenna. I formed Relaxed Machinery which is a hybrid label / artist collective. We all "self release... together". The artists' self release under the rM name - and keep 100% of their sales. I work on promotion for everyone. I've been playing music for 35 years, and working with the Relaxed Machinery artists and community, I've never been happier.

Bobby was raised in the desert southwest of the United States, and this is where his interest began in ambient music. He was inspired by the wide open spaces, harshness of the climate, and sublime landscapes of the desert. He was also highly inspired by the highly spiritual, and conversely, tumultuous history of the area. He now lives in Portland, Oregon where the gray skies and cityscapes, for him, are elements of a somewhat ideal climate for introspection.

Through Bobby’s research, life experiences, and in reading Existentialist philosophy, he came to the conclusion that all we really have at our fingertips is the very moment we exist within. And how we navigate, or make choices within any moment is greatly influenced by our ever fading memories. Then we have new memories and experiences. Consequently, we are ever becoming something new. This then becomes the basis for Bobby’s approach to the creation of his art.

I’ve Lost’ s work has at its core this importance of the creation process. Bobby begins with making a simple choice... of sounds, textures, and notes. As the memory of each choice comes back around, he reacts to that memory with a new choice. This is all done in the moment with very little planning, and no editing. At some level, Bobby allows the works to evolve on their own, but there are times when a theme emerges and continues to ride underneath the layers of sounds. From his arts education, he has developed a personal sense of the importance of improvisation – to create in the moment from what is at hand. The idea for Bobby is a reaction to the time and place of the moment, and perform from an internal space, as well as react to external situations. His work then, is a very personal expression of an emotional state, place, and time. Like a painter or sculptor, he understands the importance of the mark of the hand, the tension between rawness and refinement, and the use of colors and textures. Bobby also feels it is important not to deny the fact that the art creator brings his own experiences and sensibilities to the creation process. And this idea goes hand in hand with the idea that the listener will also bring their own selves to the work, which effectively creates for the listener their own personal meaning and interpretation of the work.

Is it a bird or a plane? It's hard to tell. The only thing we know is that he probably is a quarter of human, quarter of badger and half of cash register fed with a low frequencies. His adventure with music began
with the creation a 15 years ago (long live Fast Tracker!), the pseudo gangster project Ganja Boys, which has terrorized the neighboring shops with vegetables. Currently, his style is addressed mainly to lovers of crochet and other needlework.
